Top Things You Need to Live Life Off-Grid

Living your life off-grid means not living connected to a city’s power supply or their rain supply as well. If you have plans to live like this then there are a few things that  you need to pay attention to because they greatly impact whether or not you will be able to succeed at this type of lifestyle.

First off buy land that has a good natural water supply or source on it. If not then make sure that the climate will supply plenty of rainwater.  A water source does not have to be a river or a stream.  It just has to have consistent rainful.

Secondly make sure where you live has tillable soil. It can’t be so heavy or clay like that nothing can grow on it. It also can’t be too sandy or loose.  This is important because growing your own food is a huge part of being able to live off-grid.

Make sure that you have chosen an area to live that is not too extreme in climate. Too much rain requires pumps. Fierce winters require heat. Too much heat requires air conditioning.  Living off-grid works best in a temperate climate.   The only situation where an extreme might work for you is if the place is windy. In that case the wind and the sun might be enough to generate a great deal of electricity that can run your home.

The layout of the house can affect how comfortable you are going to be as well.  For instance if you live in the south it is advisable to have a home with trees banking it to protect it from the sun.  If you are living in the north then it is a good idea to avoid living in an area that is too high and exposed to the elements.

You should also not live too far away from civilization.  Gas is expensive and over the next few years is only going to get pricier. You will need to deal with civilization to some extent.  Budget in how much money gas is going to cost you if you have to go to town.

It is also not recommended that you try to live off-grid if you have absolutely no income. Some places are not self-sufficient until you get them going after a few y ears. Many people have already had to abandon their off-grid living because they did not realize how expensive setting up this type of lifestyle could be at first.
